(London Sights) Only seven executions actually took place within the walls of the Tower of London, but over a hundred were carried out on Tower Hill. One of the last was the execution on 18 August 1746 of the rebel Scottish Lord's Balmerino and Kilmarnock, who had supported the Stuart claimant to the throne. Charles Edward Stuart, often known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. Executions were great public spectacles and this was no exception. Vast crowds gathered and temporary seating stands were erected. For popular executions people living in houses overlooking the site rented out viewing space.
